Organization Overview
The Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission (CNMC) was established by the United Nations to facilitate the implementation of the 2002 International Court of Justice (ICJ) decision on the Cameroon-Nigeria boundary dispute. CNMC’s mandate includes land and maritime boundary demarcation, facilitating withdrawal and transfer of authority in border regions, addressing the situation of affected populations, and making recommendations on confidence-building measures.
Key Responsibilities
As a Geospatial Information Officer, you will support CNMC’s operations by coordinating geospatial information and mapping efforts. Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating the preparation, maintenance, and dissemination of geospatial information and maps for CNMC.
- Overseeing the collection, processing, and evaluation of geospatial data.
- Supervising geospatial/terrain analysis and border operations.
- Developing and ensuring quality control (QA/QC) on geospatial products, including maps.
- Providing technical support on satellite imagery, geospatial data analysis, and mapping.
- Collaborating with CNMC counterparts, UN agencies, NGOs, and the host nation on data collection and sharing.
- Conducting training programs on geospatial information for CNMC staff.
- Preparing technical reports and papers related to geospatial operations.
- Participating in field missions and other geospatial tasks as required.
Competencies
- Professionalism: Expertise in GIS and geospatial information applications, with strong skills in Topographic Line Mapping (TLM). Ability to integrate geospatial knowledge with strategic objectives.
- Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
- Creativity: Proactive in improving processes and offering innovative solutions.
- Technological Awareness: Proficient in GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro, ERDAS Imagine, and database management.
Educational Requirements
- Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Geospatial Information Science, Geography, Geomatics, or related fields. A first-level degree combined with an additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.
Experience
- Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in geospatial information management, terrain analysis, cartography, and image processing.
- Proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro and ERDAS Imagine, with experience in creating topographic maps.
- Experience with free satellite images (Landsat, Sentinel, etc.) and the use of processing software.
Languages
- Proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
Assessment and Special Notes
The assessment of candidates may involve an exercise and competency-based interview. This position is temporarily available until December 31, 2024. The selected candidate will be subject to reference checks and UN recruitment policies.
